February: Historical Fiction - “The Lions of Little Rock” by Kristin Levine
In Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1958, as politicians rage for and against the struggle to integrate schools, Marlee has struggled with a painful shyness when she makes friends with Lizzie. Then suddenly Liz is removed from school after it's discovered that she is a light-skinned African American who was passing for white. Liz and Marlee's attempts at remaining friends mean danger for their whole families. In the process of fighting to keep her friend, Marlee and those around her learn the value of speaking up against injustice.
Written for middle school students, the book has also been recommended by adult book clubs and college lit classes. Join us on Feb. 28 as we discuss the book and the desegregation crisis of the 1950's in Little Rock.
